The year is 1983. Berlin Book 3 takes place at ground zero in a world of espionage with the Iron Curtain. It’s a heart warming story of how men can love and respect men, regardless of the straight and gay boundaries created by society in the 80s.
U.S. Army First Lieutenant Joe Green takes over where his best friend Brett Walker left off. Easy going Joe vows never to settle for anything less than the life his best friends Brett and Jakob made back in Texas. Joe works undercover for the CIA taking whatever Mr. Martin throws his way in strides. Then during a daring mission on the Berlin troop train, Army First Lieutenant Scott Baker crosses his path.
First Lieutenant Scott Baker arrives to West Berlin with his suitcase and a large shipment of emotional turmoil. Having any kind of a personal relationship is definitely not on his list of priorities. Scott’s only true wish in life is to make his loving father, Army Major Mark Baker proud. He sees his first command with the Berlin Duty Train as the perfect path in achieving his goal.
Zachary Hamel. Alias Igor. Chief of Security for the U.S. Mission Berlin. He takes his job seriously. The former Green Beret Army Captain finds keeping tabs on the two Army Lieutenants can sometimes frazzle his nerves. The safety of his crew members is always his first concern. The Terrorist Alert Condition Red doesn’t make his job any easier.

Real military experience adds so many details and makes a great read even better.
The details in this book are really interesting to a person coming from a non military background like myself. It also made me think about things that I would otherwise never have come in contact with or even thought I might be interested in. It even touches on different historical events that happened before I really watched the news or even registered anything beyond my own little world. There is so much detail and depth to the story it's like you're right there experiencing the events firsthand.
In these days of legalized gay marriage its easy to take for granted what we have and what those before us fought so hard for. We can't forget the sacrifices our brave men and women had to make in their personal lives just to be able to serve and protect our great country.
And you can't help but love his characters and feel the connection they have. It makes you wish you could find that one special person that's as honest, brave, and loyal as they are. And maybe there might be someone out there for me I just haven't met yet.

More of Swank's excellence
The book continues the story seamlessly of characters who are are described so well, and are so true to life, that they feel like people I know, and would recognize if they walked through the door. The background of life in Berlin, equally well described, adds to the engagement of the reader and the excitement. As I look forward to the next book in the series, it is bitter sweet to put the one I have read down.

Best of the series so far
The plot line was exciting enough to keep turning pages but the best part was the character interactions. I am eagerly awaiting what is next for the main characters.

Jon Swank hits another home run!
Jon Swank's Berlin Book 3 is the best one yet (I still have books 4 through 6 ahead of me and I'm looking forward to each one). His characters are well delineated, he knows his Cold-War history in terms of Berlin and the Wall, and this book really draws the reader in. I hate long reviews, so I don't write long reviews, but readers interested in the US military in Berlin and how gay men managed to serve should read this book. Definitely a good read.
